(More customer reviews)For the last 8 years I've been using a set of Polk RM6700 surround speakers and a Polk PWS303 sub to power my home theater setup. This has worked OK, but I recently got the itch to make some upgrades; and it seemed like a good idea to get in-ceiling speakers for surrounds instead of having speakers suspended from the ceiling like I had before.
Originally, I was going to buy a pair of the TC60i speakers as surrounds; but, when I saw the price of the RC60i's on Amazon, I just couldn't resist. Unfortunately, after listening to them for a couple of days against my previous smaller RM3250 satellites - I decided that they just weren't cutting it. Honestly, the RC60i speakers don't even hold there own vs. the sats with 3.25" drivers in tiny enclosures. They sounded kind of hollow with the empty space behind them. (They were installed on the first floor of a 2-story house, so they don't have empty attic above them; but there is a lot of hollow ceiling between the floors.)
Lucky for me, the uninstall of the RC60i's went just as smoothly as the original install. I replaced the RC60i's with these TC60i surrounds that I had originally been looking at and the difference is amazing. The new TC60i's felt heftier and sound absolutely amazing with my new setup.I'm running 2 Polk OWM5's as right and left, a Definitive Technology ProCenter 2000, and 2 of these TC60i's as satellites.
The total install time for both in-ceiling speakers was around 30 minutes since I had already run wires through the ceiling for my previous speakers.I did buy some non-faced insulation from Home Depot that I packed behind them just to help fill the hollow space.I love that the drivers have a slight tilt, which really helps get them aimed into the listening area.If you don't mind cutting a couple of holes in the ceiling (which I don't), then you won't have any problem installing these.
As a side note, my Denon receiver set the crossover on these at 60Hz; which really helps get the surround effects behind us during movies since a lot less sound has to be offloaded to the subwoofer.
Overall, I would highly recommend these TC60i speakers as surrounds.Honestly, they are good enough to use as front speakers if you don't mind having front speakers on the ceiling.
