(More customer reviews)I bought and installed this item for a customer.I'm a custom remodeler and do a wide variety of work for handicap and others with limitations.
This unit was easy to assemble and the instructions were clear enough, the fit and finish were fine so I'd say 4 of 5 stars for these aspects.
Installation should have been easy, but because the unit is designed to mount on 16" centers, and like most of the homes today the ceiling joists are on 24" centers.My $8 "Stud Finder" had given me a false reading and so I was assuming that the installation would be quick.After test drilling with a 1/16" bit I discovered the error, and got out my $49 finder and located the 24" centers.
Now how do you extend the "Base" and not screw a piece of wood to the ceiling, and not crawl through a maze of trusses in a hot attic to build reinforcement?I cut 2 pieces of 1/4" x 1" mild steel 26" long and drilled for the lag screws at 24" and the base mounts at 16".I countersunk the backside for the 16" mounting screws and used flathead 1/4 x 20 screws and nuts on the base piece.Spray painted black, they are sturdy and don't look too bad.
My customer, and I have only one complaint/comment, and that is that the unit allows too much play and is easily swayed from side to side.The play takes place in the brace across the top of the TV where it mounts to the downtube. It is not much but enough to cause us some concern, but given the options, it is acceptable but not desired.
